Questa etnografia esplora le credenze religiose e i rituali di un gruppo di anziane donne ebree, originarie del Kurdistan e dello Yemen, che ora vivono a Gerusalemme. Sered ha visitato le donne nelle loro case e le ha accompagnate in viaggi alle tombe sacre, alle sinagoghe etniche locali e alle classi giudaiche. Scopre che, sebbene principalmente analfabeti ed escluse dalle pratiche religiose formali, le donne sono esperte in rituali volti a salvaguardare il benessere delle loro famiglie allargate. Analizzando i loro rituali, le esperienze quotidiane, le storie di vita e i gesti non verbali, Sered svela le strategie che queste donne hanno usato per aggirare le istituzioni patriarcali del giudaismo e come hanno sviluppato la loro "piccola tradizione" all'interno e parallelamente al "grande tradizione" del giudaismo della Torah. |
