• Sommario/riassunto: A partir de 1692, la enfermedad de la roya diezma los cutivos de trigo sobre la costa del Perú. La demanda peruana en cereales, cubierta en pocos años por Chile, impulsa el tráfico marítimo y el comercio del trigo entre Valparaíso y El Callao. Este es el telón de fondo de la apasionante historia de una compañia comercial establecida en Lima y en Santiago de Chile de 1710 a 1730 cuyas huellas contables e intercambios epistolares —hecho raro en la América española de inicios del siglo XVII— han sido conservados por los archivos. Las cartas entre los socios, entre el maestre del navío y los armadores, relatan minuciosamente la economía colonial de Chile y Perú pero también la vida diaria de la navegación en las fragatas que surcaban el Pacífico ibérico. Evocan igualmente el horizonte más amplio de las grandes reestructuraciones de los circuitos comerciales de la América española con la emergencia del Río de la Plata, el contrabando francés y el dominio de la navegación por el Cabo de Hornos. La edición de una selección de esta cartas y de un análisis preliminar de la contabilidad de la compañía ha parecido fundamental para ilustrar este episodio aún ; insuficientemente estudiado de la crisis del trigo en el Perú y del despegue económico de Chile.
