Sommario/riassunto

In Economic Nationalism and Globalization: Lessons from Latin America and Central Europe Henryk Szlajfer offers, against the background of developments in Latin America (mainly Brazil) and Central Europe (mainly Poland) in times of first globalization from late 19th century until late 1930's, a reinterpretation of economic nationalism both as an analytical category and historical experience. Also, critically explored are attempts at proto-economic nationalism in early 19th century Poland and Latin America as well as links between economic nationalism and the emergence of integral political nationalism and authoritarianism. Economic nationalism is interpreted as historically significant world-wide phenomenon intimately linked with the birth, development and crisis of capitalist modernity and as a response to underdevelopment under first globalization. Continuity of economic nationalism under present globalization is suggested.

Sommario/riassunto

Successful project management of construction projects is largely dependant on the confident handling of construction costs and schedules. For contractors, the ability to reliably plan costs is an essential quality feature of a good architect, and hence one of the most important basics of project preparation. Cost estimation is also vital in preparing project budgets, and it particularly requires an efficient methodology that can immediately reveal possible planning-related cost overruns. Central key concepts such as cost variables or life-cycle costs, costing methods, and cost control methods form an essential repertoire for all practicing architects.Basics Budgeting explains cost planning processes during the planning and construction phase step-by-step and on a practical level, and describes in a clear and structured manner how to estimate and evaluate cost impacts and risks. Supported by practical tips, examples, and illustrations, the inexperienced planner learns the tools of the trade in order to enter the field of budget management informed and in step with actual practice

Sommario/riassunto

This book provides a comprehensive account of asymmetric linkage in the trilogy of environment, development and sustainability and its impact on society. It examines varied perspectives and issues of development related to environmental destruction and sustainability challenges. By examining the recent trends of development and recording the dilemmas which are creating ecological imbalances, it explores some alternative ways of development to achieve sustainability. Divided into three parts, it has a broad canvass. The first section examines critically the ‘perspectives’ on ecology, practice and ethics, rural development and man–forest interaction in the metropolis. ‘Issues’ of dams, river, agricultural distress, environmental migration, eco-tourism, ecological conservation and land acquisition are assessed in part second. ‘Alternative’ means of development is explored in part third by incorporating chapters on the constructed wetland, biofuels, subsistence economy, water and traditional knowledge practice. This interdisciplinary book is of immense significance to academicians, researchers, postgraduate and graduate-level students of social sciences and environmental studies; policymakers, development practitioners and NGOs working in the area of environment and development. .
