Sommario/riassunto

This fascinating book explores how curriculum content in education was used to cultivate a sense of Australian national identity during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Providing a comprehensive picture of the entire reading curriculum in Victorian government schools over a period of almost two decades, the author demonstrates that, contrary to received wisdom, the Department of Education made every effort to integrate children of different backgrounds. Using three dimensions frequently cited in national identity theory  landscape, history, and mythology  readers are shown how material was chosen specifically to engage young white settler children and to help them overcome their sense of Australia as the 'other'. National Identity and Education in Early Twentieth Century Australia not only brings about a clearer understanding of how Australia came to be 'Australian' in character, it establishes how curriculum content may be brought into the service of nation-building across the globe.

Sommario/riassunto

"Higher mathematics" once pointed towards the involvement of infinity. This we label analysis. The ancient Greeks had helped it to a first high point when they mastered the infinite. The book traces the history of analysis along the risky route of serial procedures through antiquity. It took quite long for this type of mathematics to revive in our region. When and where it did, infinite series proved the driving force. Not until a good two millennia had gone by, would analysis head towards Greek rigor again. To follow all that trial, error and final accomplishment, is more than studying history:  It provides touching, worthwhile access to advanced calculus. Moreover, some steps beyond convergence show infinite series to naturally fit a wider frame.

Sommario/riassunto

This book provides original insight into the way we now engage and remember national history. Drawing on fieldwork and analysis of international case studies on state commemoration, memorialization, recreational and tourism  and times of disaster and crisis, the author demonstrates that not only does the nation frequently retain a strong cultural relevance in our global world but that the emergence of new

forms of ritual and remembrance means that in many instances we are seeing the re-enchantment of nationalism. Drawing upon and developing an empirically informed cultural sociology, the author charts the distinctive qualities of these new national rites and how they feed into and advance particular cosmopolitan and orthodox national politics.  Because social science has so often wrongly assumed the end of nationalism, the insights of this of the book about the possibilities and limitations of contemporary nationalism demand serious consideration by academics and also by policy makers and the general public.
