Malgré une prospérité remarquable au Moyen Âge, Douai conserve peu de vestiges architecturaux de cette période, en dehors du beffroi et de quelques portions des fortifications, et il ne subsiste rien des constructions privées. Le dynamisme et la précocité de la recherche archéologique à Douai ont permis, à l’occasion de quelques chantiers menés en centre ville, de reconnaître l’emplacement de certaines d’entre elles mais surtout de révéler l’existence de vastes caves encore conservées dans les sous-sols de la ville. La nécessité d’un recensement global s’est donc imposée, étendu à l’ensemble de la paroisse Saint-Pierre qui reprend le noyau médiéval de la ville. Ce sont près de 50 caves anciennes, maçonnées en grès d’extraction locale, très souvent extrêmement bien conservées et parfois sur deux niveaux, qui ont été recensées au cours de cette étude. Leur analyse détaillée permet non seulement de mieux connaître les techniques de construction en milieu urbain au Moyen Âge, mais offre aussi un catalogue typologique de premier ordre par la variété, l’élégance et la longévité des architectures mises en œuvre et des supports utilisés, |

pour les plus vastes d’entre elles. Locaux de commerce, spécifiquement tournés vers le stockage et la conservation du vin, leur position dans le parcellaire autorise la reconstitution de grands domaines médiévaux, de certaines portions de la voirie, et permet d’échafauder des hypothèses intéressantes sur l’existence de bâtiments civils aujourd’hui disparus. C’est donc un patrimoine de premier ordre, le plus ancien de la ville, qui est conservé sous nos pieds, livre ouvert sur le Moyen Âge urbain qui ne demande qu’à être feuilleté. |
