In het tweede deel van deze dubbeloratie gaat Paul Fockens in op de toekomst van de gastrointestinale endoscopic. Gastrointestinale endoscopie betreft het bekijken van de binnenzijde van het maagdarmstelsel met een flexibele stuurbare slang, de endoscoop. De endoscopie heeft zich sinds 1958 omgevormd van een puur diagnostische tot een veelal therapeutische modaliteit. De meeste maagbloedingen, galwegstenen en darmpoliepen worden nu endoscopisch behandeld.
