Chemometrie verfolgt das Ziel, ein Werk bereitzustellen, das auch Nicht-Spezialisten die Grundlagen der Chemometrie erschließt. So soll ihr Einsatz in diversen Disziplinen der Chemie, sowie die Anwendung der numerischen Mathematik und Informatik verbessert werden. Dabei achtet der Autor bei Abhandlung der Theorie bewusst darauf, die Themen auf das Wesentliche zu beschränken. Auf historische Entwicklungen, alternative Ansätze und Algorithmen wurde teilweise verzichtet, um etablierte und leistungsfähige Wege, Konzepte umso eingängiger zu präsentieren. Als Besonderheit werden für diverse Teilaspekte beispielhaft Anwendungen explizit vorgestellt, um anspruchsvolle Theorien, z.B. aus der linearen Algebra, ohne Hilfsmittel anwenden zu können.
