Cet ouvrage ouvre une question majeure à l'heure où le travail est souvent tenu d'abord comme un coût à réduire et, qu'à cette fin, nombre de droits collectifs et de garanties acquises par les salariés sont remis en question. L'étude traite de l'évolution des formes concrètes, mesures, références, modalités de légitimation, normes et considérations qui ont présidé et déterminent encore aujourd'hui la rémunération du travail. Consacrée à la France et à ses colonies, elle couvre une longue période qui, allant du xixe siècle à nos jours, fut aussi à la foiscelle de la seconde industrialisation, de l'affirmation de la société salariale et de la construction d'un État social. La perspective historienne de la recherche collective dont elle est issue, s'est enrichie au croisement d'autres approches disciplinaires - droit, économie, gestion, sociologie - portées par certain.es de leurs meilleur.es spécialistes.
