de Béranger est bien connue. Ce livre n’est pas une biographie de plus, mais une exploration de la culture musicale populaire du début du XIXe siècle, au prisme de ses chansons. C’est un essai sur la place de Béranger dans l’histoire de la chanson et sur les pratiques musicales de son temps, dans lequel on découvrira comment on apprend les chansons, comment on les interprète, quel est leur rôle dans l’éducation politique et dans les loisirs des hommes et des femmes d’alors. Le chansonnier écrit entre la Révolution, qui a donné une place nouvelle à la chanson comme vecteur d’idées, et le café-concert, qui en fera un moyen de divertissement de masse. Il est à la fois un homme du XVIIIe siècle, le meilleur représentant de la culture chansonnière révolutionnaire, et le fondateur de la chanson politique moderne. Il est aussi le dernier représentant majeur de la chanson non commerciale, sur timbre, offerte à toutes les interprétations. Ses chansons permettent donc d’approcher l’apprentissage de la démocratie sous l’angle de la culture populaire. |
