• Sommario/riassunto: This collection critically examines "tolerance," "secularism," and respect for religious "diversity" within a social and political system dominated by Sufi brotherhoods. Through a detailed analysis of Senegal's political ; economy, essays trace the genealogy and dynamic exchange among these concepts while investigating public spaces and political processes and their reciprocal engagement with the state, Sunni reformist and radical groups, and non-religious organizations. The anthology provides a rich and nuanced historical ethnography of the formation of Senegalese democracy, illuminating the complex trajectory of the Senegalese state and reflecting on similar postcolonial societies. Offering rare perspectives on the country's "successes" since liberation, the volume identifies the role of religion, gender, culture, ethnicity, globalization, politics, and migration in the reconfiguration of the state and society, and it makes an important contribution to democratization theory, Islamic studies, and African studies.

• Sommario/riassunto: La notion de « militant » fait partie de la vision la plus traditionnelle de l’Église, même si la banalisation du terme est relativement récente et doit beaucoup à l’action catholique telle qu’elle s’est organisée au XXe siècle. Elle acquiert en France une connotation institutionnelle dans l’entre-deux-guerres, sous le pontificat de Pie XI (1922-1939), époque à laquelle s’impose la spécialisation c’est-à-dire, selon l’expression devenue consacrée mais bien antérieure, l’« apostolat du milieu par le milieu ». Cette situation hérite du XIXe siècle, même si les priorités du militantisme catholique évoluent. Le XIXe siècle est celui des « hommes d’œuvres ». La montée de l’anticléricalisme et la séparation placent bientôt la défense religieuse au premier rang des préoccupations de beaucoup de catholiques et cet aspect ressurgit dans les périodes de crise. Pourtant, dès avant la Première Guerre mondiale, et sous l’impulsion de l’ACJF née en 1886, le militantisme des laïcs catholiques, en même temps qu’il assume la défense religieuse, prend une autre dimension et se voue à un travail de formation et d’actions sociales. Aussi, les militants catholiques deviennent-ils des acteurs de la vie sociale, au point qu’ils contribuent à un véritable renouvellement des élites locales. Le recours au témoignage de militants du monde rural et du monde ouvrier appartenant à la deuxième génération de l’action catholique spécialisée – celle qui arrive à l’âge adulte avec la Seconde Guerre mondiale –, confirme cet aspect. Le Grand Ouest français constitue à cet égard un lieu d’observation privilégié du fait de la forte présence du catholicisme, l’existence d’un militantisme actif dans le monde rural et dans le monde ouvrier, d’autant qu’on y découvre les manifestations de nouvelles formes de militantisme.
