Ce livre se présente comme une histoire politique des visibilités au carrefour de l'histoire du cinéma et de celle du catholicisme. Il interroge les rapports entre l'imposition du cinéma comme média de masse et la redéfinition d'un groupe social missionnaire – le monde catholique – dans la France du premier XXe siècle. La portée cristallisatrice du cinéma dans le catholicisme français est abordée à travers les modalités, à la fois pérennes, plurielles et souvent surprenantes, de projection, de visionnement, de critique, d'évaluation et de contestation des films par l'Église et ses fidèles. L'auteure décrit ainsi la construction, contrainte par les contingences de la récession religieuse, d'un regard confessionnel cinéphile dans ses tiraillements axiologiques et militants, à partir de l'étude de nombreux fonds d'archives restés inexplorés jusqu'à présent et du dépouillement de la presse catholique sur un demi-siècle. |
