• Sommario/riassunto: Die Hieroglyphen waren im 18. Jahrhundert eine Herausforderung für die Aufklärung und zugleich ein willkommener Gegenstand für die Esoterik. Sie galten - über den Ägyptenbezug hinaus - als rätselhafte Reste einer vorzeitigen, unbekannt gewordenen Kommunikation zwischen Bilderschrift, Gestensprache und Symbolik und erlangten eine Schlüsselstellung in der Sprach- und Schrifttheorie, der Kulturanthropologie, der Theologie und der Theosophie, aber auch in Physiognomik und Kunsttheorie. Man sah in ihnen die dunklen Anfänge jeglicher Kultur, in denen die Menschen gleichsam noch mit den Göttern verkehrten. Teils wurden sie dabei kulturanthropologisch interpretiert: Die Hieroglyphen waren die heilige Zeichen einer theokratischen Kultur, die sich durch Religion und Göttervorstellungen ihr Weltbild schuf. Teils wurden sie mit Hilfe hermetischer und neuplatonistischer Traditionen zu Botschaften des Göttlichen sakralisiert. Insgesamt erweist sich die Hieroglyphe im 18. Jahrhundert für Aufklärer und Esoteriker als Begriff, mit dem scheinbar disjunktive Phänomene wie Bild, Gestik und Schrift, Mythos und Logos sowie Metapher, Gleichnis, Metonymie und Allegorie als miteinander zusammenhängend oder zumindest kombinierbar angesprochen werden
