categorías heredadas de la época colonial debían desaparecer para ser reemplazadas por las del multiculturalismo, basadas en una concepción territorial y culturalista de la identidad: así fue como el 'negro' se convirtió en afrocolombiano o afrodescendiente, la raza en etnicidad, el color de la piel en cultura. Aunque promovidos por una elite étnica, hoy estos cambios no parecen claros y no se aplican automáticamente. Por eso, antes que de sustitución o sucesión, debe hablarse de una coexistencia de procesos múltiples de designación y de calificación del otro. Al tomar en serio el papel de las apariencias, aquí se realiza una inversión en la lógica de los análisis: las poblaciones negras no se caracterizan por una "invisibilidad", sino más bien por la visibilidad inmediata de sus rasgos raciales que, todavía hoy, actúan como marcadores de identidad encarnados en el cuerpo y como signos sociales susceptibles de interpretaciones cambiantes. Esta "competencia mestiza" para jugar con las apariencias y pasar de un cuadro normativo a otro, será analizada en diferentes situaciones de interacción observadas en Cartagena: desde los concursos de belleza hasta la ciudad turística, desde la emergencia de un actor étnico hasta la estigmatización de la champeta. |
