Sommario/riassunto

According to the federal government, the threat of terrorism on Australian soil is real and enduring, and has become a persistent and permanent feature of Australia's security environment. The main source of international terrorism and the primary terrorist threat to Australia is considered to be from a global militant jihadist movement, including violent extremists such as al-Qa'ida. Is terrorism really a significant threat to the Australian community, or are unprecedented government intelligence and policing powers and counter-terrorism laws of greater concern? What are the risks of terrorist attack from either foreign or domestically based threats? Australia's broader defence and security interests are also undergoing changes in strategic defence planning, including the vast expense of upgrading air and sea power, and

realigning our traditional alliance with the US while engaging with emerging regional giant, China. How vulnerable is Australia to attack - are we prepared?
