Obwohl die Christlich-Soziale Union 1945/1946 einen immensen Aufstieg erlebt hatte, erschütterten sie innere Auseinandersetzungen und brachten sie an den Rand der Spaltung. Flügelkämpfe, die noch heute mit so schillernden Persönlichkeiten wie Josef Müller, Fritz Schäffer oder Alois Hundhammer in Verbindung gebracht werden, drohten die politisch-programmatischen Gemeinsamkeiten aus den Gründungstagen aufzuzehren.
