L'histoire a principalement retenu Gustave Kahn (1859-1936) pour sa contribution au symbolisme littéraire et pour son œuvre de critique d'art. Or, c'est la nature même de son implication dans la vie culturelle de son époque qui fut exceptionnelle. Les études rassemblées ici développent une vision de l'auteur centrée sur son engagement artistique et social, tout en précisant des questions encore peu approfondies, comme la place de l'écrivain dans les milieux intellectuels de gauche ou encore son rôle dans la renaissance culturelle juive, en France, à partir des années 1910. L'ouvrage rend compte de la richesse d'un parcours singulier : si Kahn s'est illustré en tant que poète, son influence dépasse largement le domaine littéraire puisqu'il a été fondateur de revues, critique d'art, romancier, conteur, chroniqueur, préfacier, soutien aux artistes, libre penseur, homme de gauche convaincu et intellectuel juif. Le recueil démontre une cohérence profonde entre ces diverses formes d'engagement car, loin de la vision stéréotypée de l'écrivain symboliste dans sa tour d'ivoire, Kahn apparaît comme un auteur engagé qui défendait l'idée de la responsabilité du poète au sein de la société. |
