Die vorliegende textkritische Edition der Serapionbriefe behebt nicht nur die irrige Verbindung zweier gesonderter Traktate zu einem einzigen (IV 1-7. IV 8-23) in der Gesamtausgabe der Werke des Athanasius, die auf Bernard de Montfaucon (1698) zurückgeht, sondern stellt den Text auf eine breitere Basis von Textzeugen innerhalb deren Überlieferungsgeschichte.Athanasius, seit 328 Bischof in Alexandrien und ebendort 373 gestorben, ist wegen seines Kampfes für die nizänische Orthodoxie und der damit verbundenen Machtstellung des alexandrinischen Patriarchats im Bunde mit Rom die bedeutendste Persönlichkeit der Kirche im 4. Jahrhundert. Mit seinen Briefen an Serapion von Thmuis, auf dessen Anfrage hin im Versteck in der Wüste



abgefasst, leitete Athanasius eine neue Phase der Auseinandersetzung um den nizänischen Glauben (325) ein, welche die Gottheit des Hl. Geistes ausdrücklich in die Lehre einbezog. Damit schuf er die Grundlage für die bald einsetzende Konsolidierung von Nizäa und wies die maßgebliche Richtung für die definitive Ausformulierung des trinitarischen Dogmas auf dem zweiten ökumenischen Konzil von Konstantinopel (381).
