While a great deal of postcolonial criticism has examined how the processes of hybridity, mestizaje, creolization, and syncretism impact African diasporic literature, Oakley employs the heuristic of the “commonplace” to recast our sense of the politics of such literature. Her analysis of commonplace poetics reveals that postcolonial poetic and political moods and aspirations are far more complex than has been admitted. Putting poets Frankétienne (Haiti), Werewere Liking (Côte d’Ivoire), Derek Walcott (St Lucia), and Claudia Rankine (Jamaica) in dialogue with Romantic poets and theorists, as well as with the more recent thinkers Édouard Glissant, Walter Benjamin, and Emmanuel Levinas, Oakley shows how African Atlantic poets formally revive Romantic forms, ranging from the social utopian manifesto to the poète maudit , in their pursuit of a redemptive allegory of African Atlantic experiences. Common Places addresses issues in African and Caribbean literary studies, Romanticism, poetics, rhetorical theory, comparative literature, and translation theory, and further, models a postcolonial critique in the aesthetic-ethical and “new aestheticist” vein. |

Ce travail, issu de la thèse de doctorat de l’auteur, est parti d’une question : comment le grenier collectif de l’Atlas (agadir) survit-il à la « modernité », alors que, partout ailleurs dans le Maghreb, il s’est définitivement éteint ? Les terrains de recherche conduits durant plusieurs années, du Haut-Atlas à l’Anti-Atlas (300 greniers actifs, moribonds ou ruinés), dans l’objectif d’actualiser les données coloniales, soutiennent l’idée d’une communauté élargie au-delà des liens du sang, dont l’institution collective de l’agadir sacré affirme l’identité. Car c’est à dates fixes de chaque année que toutes les tribus possédant un grenier actif apportent leurs dons aux grandes zawya-s méridionales, placées sur les franges présahariennes, et renouvellent |

alors leur allégeance par serment aux grands saints régionaux (Imi n’Tatelt, Tamegrout, Tazerwalt, Timggilsht). Relation singulière décrite ici pour la première fois et qu’il convient d’appeler « système du grenier », par lequel circule une partie des biens nourriciers produits dans ces régions, rendant indispensable le grenier. Les circulations de dons apparaissent bien comme les prestations totales d’un système articulé autour de la baraka>. Ainsi que le montre, d’abord, le réseau des greniers de villages des Ayt Ubiâl (Sirwa), puis celui des tribus réunies en masse autour de la zawya d’Imi n’Tatelt (Anti-Atlas oriental). Les règles cependant évoluent, polarisées par les deux institutions que sont la religion, d’une part, et le patrimoine, de l’autre, selon des logiques de rupture, d’effacement des mémoires et de réécriture des pratiques individuelles et collectives.
