Née à la fin de la première grande conflagration mondiale, morte à la seconde, la Société des Nations (1919-1946) fut la première organisation internationale d’envergure, fruit de l’espoir utopique d’un monde apaisé. Sa mémoire est frappée d’une légende noire car, dans l’imaginaire collectif, la SdN est coupable d’avoir échoué à enrayer la marche vers la seconde guerre mondiale. Accusée d’inertie bureaucratique, vilipendée pour son incapacité à imposer des règlements pacifiques, la SdN a été désignée comme bouc émissaire des échecs de la sécurité collective. Cette SdN ridiculisée et honnie est pourtant mère de l’ONU. La SdN a-t-elle été un échec ou une réussite ? La réponse est loin d’être évidente. Son échec résulte des contradictions et de l’irrésolution du monde de l’entre-deux-guerres, les États membres n’ayant pas su s’entendre ou ayant privilégié un nationalisme étroit.
