Sommario/riassunto |
|
To meet the challenges of globalization, unions must improve their understanding of the changing nature of corporate ownership structures and practices, and they must develop alliances and strategies appropriate to the new environment. Global Unions includes original research from scholars around the world on the range of innovative strategies that unions use to adapt to different circumstances, industries, countries, and corporations in taking on the challenge of mounting cross-border campaigns against global firms. This collection emerges from a landmark conference where unionists, academics, and representatives of nongovernmental organizations from the Global South and the Global North met to devise strategies for labor to use when confronting the most powerful corporations such as Wal-Mart and Exxon Mobil. The workplaces discussed here include agriculture (bananas), maritime labor (dock workers), manufacturing (apparel, automobiles, medical supplies), food processing, and services (school bus drivers).Kate Bronfenbrenner's introduction sets the stage, followed by contributions describing specific examples from Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Bronfenbrenner's conclusion focuses on the key lessons for strengthening union power in relation to global capital. |

Sommario/riassunto |
|
The book provides an overview on the different aspects of gene regulation from an mRNA centric viewpoint, including how mRNA is assembled and self-assembles in a complex consisting of RNA and proteins, and how its ability to be translated at the right time and space depends on many processes acting on the mRNAs, leading to a properly folded complex. This book shows how new technologies have led to a better understanding of these processes and their connected diseases. The book is written for scientists in fundamental and applied biomedical research working on different aspects of gene regulation. It is also targeted to an audience that is not implicated in these fields directly, but wants to gain a better understanding of mRNA biology. |

Sommario/riassunto |

Anger is everywhere today. Why is there so much anger in our politics? Why do some things feed unreasonable rage, and other outrageous things fail to provoke outrage? What should we be angry about and how? Some see anger as a toxic force endangering political debate, democracy, and civil society; others see anger as a the only proper motivation to pursue injustice. In this debate, Hertzoff offers considerations grounded in Aristotle’s treatment of anger. When, why, and in what ways we become angry need to be judged against a standard of virtuous anger, measured against concepts of justice, dignity, and nobility. In bringing together Aristotle’s concept and treatment with our concerns with anger in our society gives us reason to rethink our views of anger, how we learn to be angry, and how we teach children to be angry properly . Andrew Hertzoff is Professor of Political Science, California State University Sacramento, USA. |
