Cette enquête collective dirigée par Robert Montagne de 1948 à 1950 constitue une première du genre. Consacrée à l’émergence des néo-citadins prolétaires dans les villes atlantiques du Maroc, elle fut publiée pour la première fois en 1951 dans un numéro des Cahiers de l’Afrique et l’Asie. Cette réédition est augmentée d’une introduction de Daniel Rivet qui met en lumière tout l’intérêt de cette enquête, permet de comprendre sur quelles pesanteurs, dues au contexte colonial, elle achoppa, les percées scientifiques qu’elle réalisa et l’usage que l’on peut en faire aujourd’hui.  La masse des données collectées impressionne le chercheur contemporain ; il y trouve une quantité de prises de vue topiques pour filmer les années 1940-1950. L’attention prêtée à la vie quotidienne des gens les plus simples, chez Montagne et son équipe, est saisissante et constitue encore une incitation à ne pas surévaluer l’importance de l’armature conceptuelle qui sous-tend tout



travail de recherche.  Ainsi, cette enquête constitue plus une source dans laquelle puiser une large panoplie d’exemples monographiques, de coups de crayons suggestifs et de croquis parlants, qu’un essai sur le sujet de l’exode rural et de l’urbanisation au Maroc. Sa réédition permettra de faire découvrir un élément peu connu de l’œuvre de Montagne.  Robert Montagne (1893-1954), ethnologue et spécialiste du monde berbérophone, a été professeur au Collègue de France, fondateur et directeur du Centre des hautes études d'administration musulmane.  Daniel Rivet est historien, professeur émérite à Paris 1.
