Parmi toutes les manifestations qui célébrèrent le 4ème centenaire de l’Edit de Nantes, la journée d’études organisée le 2 avril 1998 par l’Université d’Artois et son Centre de Recherches (« Des Anciens Pays-Bas à l’Eurorégion »), fut sans doute la plus septentrionale. Après s’être interrogés sur la signification qu’il fallait accorder à cet édit, les auteurs s’efforcèrent de replacer l’événement dans un cadre européen. Certes, l’Edit de Nantes n’introduisit pas beaucoup de tolérance dans la société française, mais une telle démarche était-elle possible dans le monde de l’époque ? Mis à part l’Espagne, la France au même titre que l’Angleterre, les Pays-Bas espagnols ou l’Empire, s’efforça tout de même de faire coexister deux confessions religieuses différentes. bon nombre d’ambiguïtés philosophiques et juridiques, allait peu à peu restreindre au quotidien les droits des Huguenots tout au long du xviie siècle. L’exception française, si exception il y eut, ne devait pas durer. Cet ouvrage cherche donc à faire le point sur la complexité d’un événement qui, au-delà des siècles, continue à interroger nos sociétés européennes. |
