The history of partition in the twentieth century is one steeped in controversy and violence. Literature, Partition and the Nation State offers an extended study of the social and cultural legacies of state division in Ireland and Palestine, two regions where the trauma of partition continues to shape political events to this day. Focusing on the period since the 1960s, when the original partition settlements in each region were challenged by Irish and Palestinian nationalists, Joe Cleary's book contains individual chapters on nationalism and self-determination; on the construction of national literatures in the wake of state division; and on influential Irish, Israeli and Palestinian writers, film-makers and public intellectuals. L'outil en pierre est, dans la plupart des cas, le seul témoin de la présence des hommes dans les temps reculés du Paléolithique. Notre connaissance des hommes anciens s'appuie donc essentiellement sur ces fragiles vestiges qui ont traversé le temps. L'homme du XXIe siècle, est souvent démuni face au mystère de leur fabrication, de leur emploi et même des motivations de l'artisan. Pourtant, dès les débuts du siècle dernier, les chercheurs ont élaboré des stratégies pour caractériser ces outils et échafauder des hypothèses pour cerner leur utilisation. Ces approches, à cause de leur lexique spécialisé, étaient par définition affaires de professionnels. Le présent ouvrage s'est fixé pour objectif premier de s'adresser à deux types de lecteurs : - à l'étudiant qui suit un cursus universitaire archéologique et qui trouvera au fil des pages un complément pratique aux enseignements. - à tous ceux qui, au cours d'une visite dans un musée, restent interloqués face aux vitrines, si énigmatiques, des objets en pierre. Ce livre, par son format et sa conception, sera un compagnon érudit et pratique. Il est essentiellement centré sur l'outil en pierre, c'est pourquoi les renseignements donnés sur les climats anciens, les datations et les productions artistiques le sont à titre indicatif. À qui sait l'observer et le questionner, l'outil en pierre est riche d'enseignements. Il traduit un projet de conception et d'utilisation de la part d'un homme qui, s'il est loin dans le temps, nous apparaît proche dans sa démarche et sa motivation à faire de la pierre brute un outil de sa vie quotidienne. Plus largement, l'outil trace les limites des territoires investis et mérite d'être regardé comme le témoin privilégié d'échanges culturels entre groupes sociaux.
