Er bestimmt alle für narrative Texte konstitutiven Merkmale, ergänzt um eine ausführliche Bibliographie und ein narratologisches Glossar. Dieses Kompendium stellt Studenten ebenso wie Wissenschaftlern aller Philologien ein grundlegendes und unerlässliches terminologisches und theoretisches Instrumentarium zur Verfügung.In der 3. Auflage ist die Theorie der Ereignishaftigkeit wesentlich erweitert und das Kapitel "Erzählperspektive" durch einen Abschnitt zur "Perspektivenstruktur" ergänzt worden.
