• Sommario/riassunto: The dual-use dilemma arises in the context of research in the biological and other sciences as a consequence of the fact that one and the same piece of scientific research sometimes has the potential to be used for harmful as well as good purposes. Discoveries that may lead to important advances in science and medicine might therefore also facilitate development of biological weapons of mass destruction. Scientists should be aware of the ways in which their well-intentioned research could be misused by others - and they should sometimes ; avoid research projects when the potential for harmful misuse is great. Policy makers must make tough choices about the extent to which the dual-use nature of research might justify increased oversight, regulation, and perhaps even censorship of science. This book examines the kinds of life-science experiments that give rise to the dual-use dilemma and provides philosophical analysis of the ethical issues and policy options surrounding dual-use research. Though the dual-use dilemma is an ethical issue, the vast majority of literature on the topic thus far has been written by scientists and security experts: this is the first book-length treatment of the topic by professional ethicists. It also challenges, and offers an alternative perspective to, the hugely influential U.S. National Research Council position on the dual-use dilemma.

• Sommario/riassunto: The period from Plato's birth to Aristotle's death (427-322 BC) is one of the most influential and formative in the history of Western philosophy. The developments of logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and science in this period have been investigated, controversies have arisen and many new theories have been produced. But this is the first book to give detailed scholarly attention to the development of dialectic during this decisive period. It includes chapters on topics such as: dialectic as interpersonal debate between a questioner and a respondent; dialectic and the dialogue form; dialectical methodology; the dialectical context of certain forms of arguments; the role of the respondent in guaranteeing good argument; dialectic and presentation of knowledge; the interrelations between written dialogues and spoken dialectic; and definition, induction and refutation from Plato to Aristotle. • Sommario/riassunto: L'intreccio di molte linee narrative in simultanea è una svolta fondamentale nella storia della letteratura e in particolare nell'elaborazione della fortunata forma che chiamiamo "romanzo". Senza quella innovazione, non avremmo forse mai avuto opere come "I miserabili" o "Guerra e pace". È nei testi del ciclo del Graal - dunque nella Francia del Duecento - che viene adottata per la prima volta e poi perfezionata questa tecnica rivoluzionaria destinata a influenzare autori come Ariosto o Malory, e a imporsi poi definitivamente nella tradizione narrativa europea. Ma come e perché ha avuto origine questa svolta? Grazie a un'indagine congiunta sui fronti dell'analisi letteraria, della filologia e della storia culturale, l'autore avanza un'ipotesi originale, che chiama in causa un mutamento di prospettiva intervenuto nel pensiero storiografico medievale.
