Aquest volum recull les contribucions que es van presentar a la vint-i-cinquena edició del Col·loqui Lingüístic de la Universitat de Barcelona (CLUB 25), el qual, amb el títol «Un CLUB més que un Club: 25 anys enraonant sobre la llengua», tingué lloc el 17 de novembre de 2017. En aquesta ocasió es proposà un disseny basat en dues taules rodones: la primera, «L'abast, les possibilitats i els límits de les polítiques lingüístiques» es dedica a qüestions relacionades amb la sociolingüística, i la segona, «Estàndard, dialectes i dialèctica», se centra en aspectes vinculats a la dialectologia. A més de les presentacions individuals, centrades exclusivament en el català, el llibre inclou dues noves contribucions que examinen l'estat del basc i del gallec des de l'òptica integrada de la sociolingüística i de la dialectologia.
