|
Many people today die in old age after a long chronic illness. Due to medical progress, it is possible to preserve human life even under very precarious conditions; difficult decisions about the further course of therapy are inevitable. In view of the finite nature of the available resources, decisions about extending the therapy also raise sensitive questions of fair distribution. Care in the last phase of life is particularly cost-intensive. If very expensive treatments are available, there are competitive situations that require limitation ("rationing"). Which criteria can be used from a medical, legal, economic and ethical perspective, which are potentially problematic? What does it mean to be a just and caring society in the face of scarcity (Leonard M. Fleck)? |
