Sommario/riassunto

This volume takes a fresh look at a range of hypertension topics that are of primary interest to the clinical nephrologist. The book includes balanced reviews on the clinical physiology of endothelin and nitric

oxide and the role of these substances in primary and secondary hypertension. Some still unsolved problems in the diagnosis and treatment of renovascular hypertension and renal ischemia are reexamined in light of the latest results from ongoing studies. The problem of ‘renal risk’ in essential hypertension is addressed mainly in terms of early prediction and the importance of microalbuminuria and glomerular hyperfiltration is thoroughly discussed. Finally, the increased cardiovascular risk and hemodynamic instability in patients undergoing dialysis are reevaluated on the basis of the most recent studies.

Sommario/riassunto

This book presents comparative design as an approach to the conceptual design of structures. Primarily focusing on reasonable structural performance, sustainable development and architectural aesthetics, it features detailed studies of structural performance through the composition and de-composition of these elements for a variety of structures, such as high-rise buildings, long-span crossings and spatial structures. The latter part of the book addresses the theoretical basis and practical implementation of knowledge engineering in structural design, and a case-based fuzzy reasoning method is introduced to illustrate the concept and method of intelligent design. The book is intended for civil engineers, structural designers and architects, as well as senior undergraduate and graduate students in civil engineering and architecture. Shaopei Lin and Zhen Huang are both Professors at the Department of Civil Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

Sommario/riassunto

This book is the first in a two-volume set devoted to bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) and the opportunities that they may offer in providing a green solution to growing energy demands worldwide. In this first volume, established research professionals explain the underlying principles and processes of BESs, providing a thorough introduction to these systems before proceeding to address the roles of cathode catalysts and biocatalysts, biofilms, heterotrophic denitrification, and nanotechnology approaches. This volume forms a sound foundation for understanding the potential industrial applications of this technology, which include in particular the generation of high-value chemicals and energy using organic wastes. These applications are the focus of the second volume, where readers will find up-to-date information on microbial fuel cells and the use of microbial biofilm- and algae-based bioelectrochemical systems for bioremediation and co-generation of valuable chemicals. The book isdesigned for a broad audience, including undergraduates, postgraduates, energy researchers/scientists, policymakers, and anyone else interested in the latest developments in this field.
