I rapporti tra Dante e la cultura islamica sono notoriamente controversi. Se, da una parte, il sommo poeta è sempre piuttosto aspro e polemico contro l'Islam; dall'altra, nella Commedia ma ancor di più nel Convivio, teorizza una cosmologia in cui le tracce di arabismo sono evidentissime: dalla struttura fisica dei cieli al ruolo degli intelletti che muovono le sfere per appetito d'amore. Questo libro cerca di colmare il vuoto lasciato nella memoria dell'Occidente, indagando il retaggio del pensiero islamico in Dante, di cui offre anche una innovativa ipotesi biografico-intellettuale con particolare enfasi sul contesto politico.
