• Sommario/riassunto: Après le nazisme et sa perversion de l’idée de Nation, la question nationale allemande est loin d’être réglée au début des années cinquante. Elle se pose à nouveau aux occupants occidentaux qui sont chargés de la gestion de l’Allemagne dans son état intermédiaire entre stricte occupation et retour à la souveraineté et doivent, avec les nouveaux dirigeants allemands, conduire le pays sur la voie d’une démocratie durable et d’une Europe de paix. Dans cette entreprise, un objectif majeur est d’empêcher la renaissance du nationalisme allemand considéré comme le germe de la catastrophe du xxe siècle. Or, en raison du caractère protéiforme du concept, la tentation est grande de débusquer le nationalisme derrière toute manifestation d’existence nationale dans l’Allemagne en reconstruction. Cette étude ne s’arrête pas au sens restreint de la question nationale allemande, limité au problème de la division et aux moyens de son dépassement, mais elle l’envisage dans ses nombreuses manifestations : ce sont des questions de territoire, de population, de nationalité, de souveraineté et d’identité qui dominent les débats majeurs de l’époque tels le ; réarmement et le positionnement de l’Allemagne occidentale en Europe. Les archives ont conduit à étudier ces phénomènes en intégrant le regard des membres du Haut-commissariat français en Allemagne. Il en ressort que le danger putatif d’une renaissance du nationalisme est un prisme révélateur des problèmes de statut, de perception et d’image de soi dans les rapports de la jeune Allemagne fédérale avec la France.
