Au début du xxe siècle, Alcântara donne l’image d’un quartier industrialisé d’une grande ville européenne. Longtemps faubourg de Lisbonne puis quartier populaire mieux intégré à l’univers urbain, Alcântara n’a alors rien d’un quartier ouvrier monolithique et socialement homogène. Il s’agit d’un milieu complexe et instable dont l’évolution demeure emblématique de l’histoire du Portugal contemporain : une urbanisation circonscrite mais qui s’est accélérée au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle ; une industrialisation poussive mais diversifiée. Alcântara, un milieu populaire plus qu’ouvrier proprement dit où cohabitent des ouvriers plus ou moins qualifiés, des artisans, le monde du petit commerce et quelques employés ou fonctionnaires. Tel est l’objet de cette étude : des modes de rencontre, d’approximation ou de mise à distance entre des groupes socioprofessionnels sans cesse en reconstruction ; les habitants d’Alcântara saisis dans la diversité de leurs trajectoires, de leurs appartenances professionnelles et de leurs relations.
