• Sommario/riassunto: Hubert Guillotel a soutenu, en 1973, une thèse d’histoire du droit intitulée Les Actes des ducs de Bretagne (944-1148). L’édition critique de ces cent soixante-et-onze documents se voulait une enquête sur le pouvoir ducal en Bretagne aux Xe-XIIesiècles. Ce travail monumental posait les fondements des recherches qu’il poursuivrait, avec passion, jusqu’à sa disparition en 2004. Loin d’être enfermée dans d’obscurs particularismes, il voyait la Bretagne s’ouvrant, sans retard, aux réalités et innovations que connaissait alors l’Europe. Il démontra la survivance de l’ordre carolingien dans les institutions bretonnes et sut comprendre que l’histoire de l’Église devait être aussi une histoire des pouvoirs et de la société. À la tête de celle-ci, la noblesse, initialement au service du titulaire de la puissance publique, entendait affermir son autorité propre. Foi due à Dieu, foi jurée au prince ou promise à son seigneur : ; la foi était l’un des fondements de cette société à laquelle Hubert Guillotel s’est attaché à rendre vie. Dès lors les mots de pouvoir et de foi ne pouvaient qu’être associés aux contributions qui lui sont ici offertes par ses collègues, disciples et amis. Service du Prince et encadrement des hommes et des âmes étant intimement liés, deux axes majeurs se dégagent. Le premier voit se définir comment se fonda le pouvoir sur les âmes. Juger, gouverner, combattre, tels sont ensuite les trois thèmes abordés pour appréhender le pouvoir sur les hommes. H. Guillotel a toujours tenu à étayer sa réflexion par l’archéologie, l’onomastique, la toponymie ou la linguistique. Elles trouvent donc ici la place qui leur revient. Enfin, il savait toute l’importance d’une ouverture à des espaces géographiques différents, permettant de déterminer spécificités ou ressemblances.
