La question du paysage semble soulever de nos jours un vif intérêt, comme en témoignent la parution d’ouvrages récents, fruits d’une collaboration entre philosophes, littéraires, sociologues et spécialistes de la peinture. Pourquoi cet attrait à notre époque pour le paysage ? Peut-être parce que les menaces qui pèsent sur le monde réel appellent à une réflexion sur les rapports que nous instaurons avec notre environnement. La catégorie du paysage se prête à cette réflexion parce qu’elle insiste sur la subjectivité du regard qui détermine notre appréhension de la nature et de sa transformation en objet d’art. La découverte d’un « paysage urbain » accompagne au cours du xixe et du xxe siècles les transformations de la ville. La réalité urbaine exige des artistes des efforts nouveaux pour adapter les catégories esthétiques héritées de la représentation du paysage naturel aux besoins de ce nouveau sujet. De 1830 à nos jours les paysages urbains traduisent une révolution au niveau du regard et du rapport entre le sujet et l’objet. Le paysage ne peut plus se réduire à un décor extérieur au sujet, il constitue d’une certaine manière le prolongement du sujet : prolongement de son corps et de sa conscience. Les responsables de ce volume ont choisi de placer cette étude sous le signe de l’ouverture méthodologique et pluridisciplinaire, car c’est par des regards croisés et une confrontation des approches qu’on arrive le mieux à cerner la complexité de la question. |
