Strabon (63 av. J.-C.- 24 apr. J.-C.) est un écrivain grec d’Asie Mineure du début de l’Empire (il est presque l’exact contemporain de l’empereur Auguste). Le seul ouvrage qui nous soit parvenu de lui est sa Géographie, en dix-sept livres, unique en son genre. Le livre IV, consacré à la Celtique transalpine, à la Bretagne et aux Alpes, est une référence incontournable pour tous les travaux sur la Gaule, qu’ils émanent d’historiens ou d’archéologues. L’ouvrage présente une nouvelle traduction du livre IV (la précédente date de près de cinquante ans !), qui s’appuie à la fois sur une relecture très attentive du texte grec, présenté en regard de la traduction, et sur les acquis les plus récents de la recherche dans ce domaine. La traduction est accompagnée d’une série d’études à la fois historiques et archéologiques. Les unes abordent des problèmes généraux comme la comparaison entre Strabon, Pline et Ptolémée ou la réflexion sur la notion de Celtes et de Celtique. Les autres concernent plus précisément la Narbonnaise, faisant le point sur les peuples (Salyens, Ligyens, Volques Arécomiques et Tectosages) ou les villes (Nîmes, Toulouse et Marseille). Dans tous les cas, la confrontation des données textuelles et faits archéologiques permet de reconsidérer les hypothèses antérieures pour en proposer, le cas échéant, de nouvelles. Abondamment illustré, en particulier par des cartes qui restituent la vision géographique de l’Antiquité, l’ouvrage offre au lecteur une approche renouvelée de la Gaule telle que la décrivait Strabon dans les premières années de notre ère. |
