C'est dans un large cadre géographique que s'inscrit le travail d'Yves Lequin : Lyon et sa mouvance directe mais aussi le bassin de la Loire, le Dauphiné, la Savoie, le Bugey, le Vivarais, les montagnes du Roannais et du Beaujolais ; il évite ainsi à la fois l'étroitesse de la monographie et les faux-semblants du cadre national confondu avec les appareils parisiens. Livre d'histoire sociale de la classe ouvrière, il éclaire la vie et l'action de ses organisations par les modalités de l'industrialisation, par les évolutions de la vie matérielle et culturelle, par la sociologie des groupes où elles s'insèrent. L'image qui en sort rompt avec l'idée habituelle d'une évolution linéaire. Yves Lequin oppose fortement deux périodes séparées, grossièrement par la grande dépression des années 1880-1890 qui coïncide avec une profonde mutation de toute l'économie régionale. Jusque-là, l'industrialisation n'a pas été rupture mais développement parti de loin ; aussi les groupes ouvriers renforcent-ils leur cohésion en augmentant leur nombre, même si la médiocrité des conditions de travail et de vie correspond bien aux descriptions du temps ; autour du métier naissent des mouvements |

collectifs et une prise de conscience très précoces d'où sortent des organisations professionnelles d'une puissance insoupçonnée et qui atteignent leur apogée à la veille des années 1880. C'est après 1890, la reconversion totale de l'industrie régionale qui brise leur base militante ; la Belle Époque est un temps d'inquiétudes et d'incertitudes malgré l'amélioration du niveau de vie ; avec la disparition du « métier » liée à une déqualification générale du travail, disparaît ou s'affaiblit l'identité collective. C'est en fait une nouvelle classe ouvrière qui est en train de naître, encore incertaine d'elle-même et souvent prisonnière de conduites revendicatives ou politiques héritées du XIXe siècle, inadaptées au siècle qui naît. |

catastrophic events in the region. Introducing the conceptual frame of postcatastrophe, the collected essays explore the discursive and artistic space the Shoah occupies in the countries between Moscow and Berlin. Postcatastrophe is informed by the knowledge of other concepts of "post" and shares their insight into forms of transmission and latency; in contrast to them, explores the after-effects of extreme events on a collective, aesthetic, and political rather than a personal level. The articles use the concept of postcatastrophe as a key to understanding the entangled and conflicted cultures of remembrance in postsocialist literatures and the arts dealing with events, phenomena and developments that refuse to remain in the past and still continue to shape perceptions of today's societies in Eastern Europe.
