Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und andere westeuropäische Industriestaaten warben von den 1950er bis zu den frühen 1970er Jahren Millionen ausländische Arbeitskräfte an, um ihre nationalen Arbeitsmärkte in Zeiten der Hochkonjunktur zu ergänzen. Zahlreiche bilaterale Anwerbeabkommen boten den Rahmen. Bis heute werden die Folgen des "Gastarbeiter"-Systems unter dem Stichwort "Integration" kontrovers diskutiert. Das Sammelwerk bietet aktuelle Ergebnisse der Historischen Migrationsforschung.
