La présente étude s’attache à décrypter l’organisation et le fonctionnement de juridictions situées au premier niveau de l’appareil judiciaire. Longtemps dépeintes comme inefficaces, incompétentes, partiales et même âpres au gain, les justices seigneuriales font l’objet, depuis plusieurs années déjà, d’une révision historiographique qui montre au contraire qu’elles peuvent être pleinement parties prenantes des régulations sociales, attachées davantage à réconcilier qu’à sanctionner les plaideurs. Fondée sur le dépouillement exhaustif d’archives de la pratique judiciaire, l’étude tente une approche à la fois quantitative et qualitative des registres audienciers d’affaires judiciaires et d’amendes, tout en faisant une large place au droit coutumier en vigueur dans ces deux provinces du royaume de France. Cette recherche examine ainsi la manière dont l’audience s’organise, le personnel qu’elle mobilise, mais également l’activité quotidienne des tribunaux seigneuriaux à travers la procédure suivie, le type d’affaires jugées et les condamnations prononcées ; le tout en essayant de |

dégager les « modèles » susceptibles d’avoir influencé la conduite de l’exercice judiciaire dans cette région et à ce niveau institutionnel. Au-delà de ces aspects strictement juridique et judiciaire, ce travail tente enfin d’appréhender le profil des plaideurs, la manière dont ils usent de la justice, et plus largement la place et le rôle assignés à cette dernière vis-à-vis des justiciables et de l’autorité seigneuriale. |

"Corpus linguistics has much to offer history, being as both disciplines engage so heavily in analysis of large amounts of textual material. This book demonstrates the opportunities for exploring corpus linguistics as a method in historiography and the humanities and social sciences more generally. Focussing on the topic of prostitution in 17th-century England, it shows how corpus methods can assist in social research, and can be used to deepen our understanding and comprehension. McEnery and Baker draw principally on two sources - the newsbook Mercurius Fumigosis and the Early English Books Online Corpus.
