Cet ouvrage étudie l'évolution des savoirs, à la fois dans le domaine des sciences humaines qui émergent alors, comme l'anthropologie ou la géographie, et à partir de connaissances plus diffuses, à la limite parfois du scientifique et du magique, telles les expérimentations faites sur l'électricité. Le xviiie siècle, qualifié avec raison d'âge des dictionnaires, est une période où l'on se passionne pour la mise en ordre de l'univers et pour l'établissement de nomenclatures. L'Encyclopédie de Diderot est le témoignage le plus brillant de ce nouvel état d'esprit. Au xixe, cet encyclopédisme raisonné continuera de nourrir les principaux courants intellectuels, des saint-simoniens aux penseurs catholiques. |
