Peut-on imaginer une manifestation sans chansons ? Qu'il s'agisse d'entonner à pleins poumons des hymnes au fort pouvoir identifiant, ou de détourner des airs connus… tout rassemblement politique connait son intermède chantant. Cette habitude a son histoire. Depuis les mazarinades et la Révolution française, elle accompagne l'irruption de la foule dans la vie de la cité. Au 19e siècle elle prend cependant une nouvelle ampleur. Sous l'influence de Béranger et de ses nombreux imitateurs, les chansons commentant l'actualité deviennent de plus en plus nombreuses et circulent de plus en plus facilement. Les développements de l'imprimé, des sociabilités, des populations migrantes expliquent ces évolutions. La parole chansonnière, perçue comme une « voix du peuple », devient alors un enjeu politique de première importance. Comment se forme cette culture qui ne tarde pas à revendiquer une certaine autonomie ? Que dit-elle ? Comment se diffuse-t-elle ?
