Surprendront tout autant un système médical non scientifique et son inefficacité pratique, mais aussi les croyances et les coutumes, la vigueur de la foi de toute une société, qui trouve un recours essentiel dans le culte de la Vierge protectrice et des saints guérisseurs, ou encore la confiance placée dans les rebouteux, dans les guérisseurs et dans les empiriques, si ce n'est dans quelques charlatans de passage qui se font forts de guérir « les maladies incurables ». En revanche, la tentative, voici plus de deux siècles, de mettre sur pied une organisation de la santé publique démontrera à l'homme d'aujourd'hui qu'à Saint-Malo, à l'instar des autres grandes cités françaises, se déploie un effort sans précédent pour édifier un rempart contre l'adversité.
