Comment mettre en doute nos certitudes, comment suspendre notre jugement lorsqu'on fait de l'histoire institutionnelle, économique et financière ? Que sait-on, que peut-on savoir, compte tenu de nos traditions et coutumes de travail, de notre capacité de réflexion, mais aussi de l'état des archives, du niveau actuel de notre savoir, de la force de nos convictions et de notre foi aveuglante en la toute puissance explicative d'une science historique qui serait source de vérité ? nos certitudes, si l'on arrêtait de se prendre pour des « producteurs de logique », des « logiciens du système », si l'on admettait que toutes nos explications ne sont jamais que des approches plus ou moins probables d'une réalité passée qui restera toujours inaccessible ? Et puis, enfin, que ne veut-on pas savoir, qu'est-ce qui nous dérange dans l'approche du passé ? Quelques historiens éminents des institutions, de l'économie et des finances ont accepté de réfléchir à ces questions, soit aux méthodes de travail de cette forme particulière de l'histoire, et d'élaborer une sorte de bilan de ses enjeux intellectuels. |
