Mobilité et démocratie forment en apparence un couple historique idéal. Union de deux idéaux en tout cas, dont Les transports de la démocratie éclairent les destinées variées et les affinités tumultueuses. S'ils semblent indissociables, ces deux idéaux se posent mutuellement des problèmes en pratique. La reconfiguration au cours du temps des liens qui les unissent et parfois les entravent dans un environnement changeant : tel est le sujet de ce volume. Écrit depuis plusieurs perspectives disciplinaires (histoire, science politique, géographie et économie), ce livre est centré d'une part sur la France, tout en offrant des points de comparaison avec d'autres espaces politiques, et d'autre part sur le second XXe siècle, tout en s'autorisant des échappées vers les périodes antérieures.
