Plus de 80 000 soldats français ont été envoyés aux Dardanelles en 1915 par un gouvernement réticent, dans une expédition improvisée et organisée à la hâte. Quand l'échec devint évident, les survivants ont été convoyés vers Salonique pour une autre expédition encore plus importante en Macédoine, au total près de 400 000 soldats français sont passés par cette armée d’Orient. Les soldats partaient avec appréhension vers l’inconnu, mais les mots de Constantinople, Orient et Grèce, leur rappelaient des visions littéraires agréables, à eux comme à leur famille qui ignoraient tout du pays. Leurs mémoires montrent que les réalités furent tout sauf agréables : conditions naturelles, climat, approvisionnement, équipement, munitions, maladies ; mais leur correspondance, censurée et autocensurée, ne dit rien de cela en France et la presse se tait. Tout au contraire, elle répand l’image des plaisirs de Salonique que peuvent connaître les officiers et les correspondants de presse, image qui restera après la guerre et fait que leur contribution à la victoire des alliés sera sous‑estimée. Leurs souffrances et leurs sacrifices sont ignorés, on les croit « planqués » au soleil. Chez eux, l’amertume est grande : ils comprennent que gagner Constantinople est impossible, ils constatent que la Macédoine ne ressemble pas à la Grèce de leurs rêves, que toutes les populations ne sont pas grecques et que, même les Grecs, ne sont pas toujours heureux de les voir. Alors pourquoi aller mourir loin de chez soi quand votre propre gouvernement vous abandonne, en quoi cela contribue‑t‑il à défendre la France ?
