• Sommario/riassunto: Quando si parla di polizia con riferimento ai secoli dell’età moderna il termine che salta subito alla mente è quello di “sbirro”, o “birro” che dir si voglia. Era in effetti questo il termine connotativo di chi più da vicino rappresentava allora quella che oggi chiameremmo polizia giudiziaria. Nello stesso tempo il medesimo termine è rimasto nell’uso odierno, con valenza denigratoria verso gli uomini della polizia. Il presente volume intende appunto affrontare nei suoi diversi aspetti il tema della polizia giudiziaria, dalla prima età moderna all’oggi, analizzandone professionalità, caratteri e funzioni. Il tutto in un percorso secolare volto a mettere in luce le cesure, che dagli esecutori d’antico regime hanno portato, tra Sette e Ottocento, alla polizia giudiziaria che oggi conosciamo. Ma nello stesso tempo volto a riconoscere quegli elementi professionali e operativi che tengono uniti, da una sorta di filo rosso, due espressioni del “fare polizia” pur tra loro così distanti.
