|
Inaugural lecture delivered on January 21, 2010, Chair of Technological Innovation Liliane Bettencourt (2009-2010). The design of nanotechnologies capable of transporting drugs in the body and releasing them in a specific manner at the level of the site of action makes it possible to increase the therapeutic activity and to reduce the toxicity of many drugs. These “nanovectors” are capable of protecting the active molecule from degradation by the enzymes of the organism, of targeting it selectively towards the target tissue or cell, and of controlling its release. More specific than traditional pharmaceutical formulations, “nanomedicines” make it possible to design new therapeutic strategies in the fight against severe diseases: cancers, intracellular infections, metabolic or neurodegenerative diseases, etc. The Chair of Technological Innovation at the Collège de France was created with the support of the Bettencourt-Schueller Foundation. |

This book represents a novel attempt to describe microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as a renewable energy source derived from organic wastes. Bioelectricity is usually produced through MFCs in oxygen-deficient environments, where a series of microorganisms convert the complex wastes into electrons via liquefaction through a cascade of enzymes in a bioelectrochemical process. The book provides a detailed description of MFC technologies and their applications, along with the theories underlying the electron transfer mechanisms, the biochemistry and the microbiology involved, and the material characteristics of the anode, cathode and separator. It is intended for a broad audience, mainly undergraduates, postgraduates, energy researchers, scientists working in industry and at research organizations, energy specialists, policymakers, and anyone else interested in the latest developments concerning MFCs. . |

This open access volume features a data-rich portrait of what young adults think about the world. It collects the views of students in higher education from various cultural regions, religious traditions, linguistic groups, and political systems. This will help readers better understand a generation that will soon rise to power and influence. The analysis focuses on 12 countries. These include Canada, China, Finland, Ghana, India, Israel, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, and the USA. It employs a mixed-methods approach, invested in the study of an individual's views and values using state-of-the-art methodology, including the innovative Faith Q-sort. This instrument is new to the field and developed for assessing the entanglement of subjective views and personal beliefs. The study also incorporates a comprehensive values survey as well as other survey tools that look into people's social capital, media use, social values alignment, and subjective well-being. Each chapter is co-authored by an international team of scholars with research interest in the particular topic. The rationale for this principle is the need to engage individuals from different cultural backgrounds, scholarly disciplines, and methodological and substantive competences. In the end, this innovative approach presents an informed, empirically grounded analysis of the values and worldviews of the future generation. It sheds an important light on how changes in the religious landscape are intertwined with broad and diffuse processes of socio-economic and global cultural change. |
