|
Le débat sur les institutions de haut savoir au Québec remonte aussi loin que la Conquête et n'a jamais cessé, aussi bien chez les anglophones que chez les francophones. Avec la fondation des universités McGill en 1821, et Laval en 1852, suivies par d'autres établissements d'enseignement supérieur, les débats cessent d'être purement théoriques. L'idée d'université évolue désormais avec sa mise en œuvre. Ce sont souvent ceux qui lui consacrent leur vie qui sentent le besoin de faire le point sur ce qu'est devenu l'enseignement supérieur : William Dawson, Édouard Montpetit, Marie-Victorin, F. Cyril James, Guy Rocher. Filion, André Laurendeau. Si l'histoire de l'université au Québec reste à écrire, cette anthologie en donne du moins une première esquisse. Elle démontre clairement que l'idée même d'université a évolué au gré des différents courants de pensée qui se sont affrontés pendant deux cents ans sur la scène politique et sociale. On passe des réticences de Mgr Hubert à voir un peuple jeune se frotter de trop près aux Lumières, au Rapport Rioux qui veut intégrer à l'université la formation artistique qui relevait auparavant d'écoles spécialisées. On passe de ceux comme Stanley Gray qui souhaitent mettre l'université au service de la Révolution, à ceux qui veulent d'abord en faire un instrument de développement économique et régional. Si tous s'entendent sur l'importance de l'université, cet accord ne saurait recouvrir aucune unanimité, et les débats qui en découlent sont toujours passionnants. |
