"בספרו ישראל, ארצות הברית והמאבק על הקפאת הבנייה בהתנחלויות, 2010-2009 מגולל המחבר, זכי שלום, את הדרך הנפתלת והסבוכה בה צעד הנשיא אובמה במאמציו להביא להסדר ישראלי-פלסטיני בשנתיים הראשונות לכהונתו. בהסתמך על מקורות מידע מגוונים ועדויות של בכירים בממשל האמריקאי ובישראל, מתאר המחבר את קורות יחסי שתי המדינות, שעמדו בסימן משבר קשה ורווי מתח. המחבר מנתח את הסיבות והאילוצים שמנעו את קידום ההסדר, כפי שקיווה הנשיא אובמה. משנכנס לתפקידו הטיל הנשיא אובמה את כל כובד משקלו ויוקרתו להנעת תהליך שיוביל להסדר ישראלי-פלסטיני. הוא האמין, קרוב לוודאי, שמעמדו הבינלאומי ומנופי הלחץ שבידי הממשל יחייבו את שני הצדדים הנצים לפעול על פי המתווה שהוא הציב בפניהם אולם שני הצדדים סירבו לקבל את תביעותיו ככתבן וכלשונן. על סִפּו של קרע חמור בין ישראל וארצות הברית התרצה הנשיא, בסופו של דבר, לקבל מתווה של פשרה בסוגיית הבנייה בהתנחלויות. בכך נפתחה הדרך להפשרה, ולו מוגבלת, של היחסים בין שתי המדינות. |
בשפה קולחת ובפירוט רב מציג הספר את ההתרחשויות והאירועים סביב יוזמת הנשיא להסדר ישראלי-פלסטיני, ובהם נאום הנשיא אובמה בקהיר, נאום ראש הממשלה נתניהו באוניברסיטת בר-אילן, המשבר בעת ביקור סגן הנשיא ביידן בישראל ולבסוף, תהליך ה'הָפְשרה' וגיבוש ההבנות סביב הבנייה בהתנחלויות. מאמציו של הנשיא אובמה לא הובילו לקידום הסדר ישראלי-פלסטיני אולם |
