Das Ersatzheer der Wehrmacht im Zweiten Weltkrieg ist immer noch eine Terra incognita. Dabei war seine Bedeutung an der Heimatfront immens. Es übernahm dort für das NS-Regime wichtige gesellschaftliche Aufgaben, wozu auch ein besonderer Aspekt der NS-Gerichtsbarkeit zu zählen ist: die Wehrmachtjustiz im Heimatgebiet. Kerstin Theis zeichnet am Beispiel eines Militärgerichts ein umfassendes und nuanciertes Bild dieser bisher fast ganz übersehenen militärischen Einrichtung. Auf breiter Quellenbasis liefert sie ein detailliertes Gruppenprofil der dort tätigen Richter und Befehlshaber. Sie beleuchtet den Gerichtsalltag, der sich nicht in der Strafverfolgung gegen Deserteure und der Verhängung von Todesurteilen erschöpft, sondern ein breites Spektrum von Delikten und Angeklagten-Gruppen umfasst. Schließlich - und das ist das größte Verdienst dieser innovativen Studie - kann die Autorin zeigen, wie die Richter in der Heimat mit ihren Mitteln versuchten, aus der "Volksgemeinschaft" eine mobilisierte Wehrgemeinschaft zu formen, in der alles den Erfordernissen eines "totalen" Krieges untergeordnet war.

This study paints a comprehensive picture of military justice in the Ersatzheer, or replacement army of the Wehrmacht, which had various home-front tasks. The author analyzes the operation of Ersatzheer military courts during the Second World War. She offers a general portrait of court personnel, and describes their attempts as an "extended arm of the Wehrmacht" to militarize society.
