|
À partir l'abdication de Charles Quint, en 1556, la monarchie hispanique et le Saint-Empire Romain Germanique sont gouvernés par deux branches distinctes d'une même famille, les Habsbourg. Ces liens dynastiques ne suffisent cependant pas à maintenir des relations harmonieuses entre eux : des intermédiaires sont nécessaires pour permettre à la présence espagnole d'être efficace dans l'espace impérial. Électeurs et archichanceliers impériaux, les archevêques de Mayence jouent ce rôle durant le premier tiers du xviie siècle, une période à la fois brève et cruciale pour la monarchie hispanique. Inspiré des démarches de l'histoire sociale et connectée, ce livre rend compte des relations entre les Espagnols et les archevêques de Mayence, en montrant les difficultés hispaniques pour établir un lien avec les prélats puis, une fois intégrés à la clientèle du Roi Catholique, leur rôle essentiel comme animateurs des réseaux hispaniques dans le Saint-Empire, sur fond de tensions confessionnelles. |
