Op 1 januari 2003 is de huidige (zevende) wetenschappelijke raad voor het regeringsbeleid aan het werk gegaan. Kort na zijn aantreden publiceerde de raad het werkprogramma: ‘Kennis van het heden, wegen naar de toekomst’. Een groot aantal van de daarin voorgenomen projecten zijn inmiddels afgerond of worden binnenkort afgerond. Reden voor de raad om zich te buigen over nieuwe onderwerpen waarvan de raad meent dat die vanuit zijn wettelijke taak aan de orde moeten worden gesteld. Het gaat daarbij om vraagstukken en kwesties die van groot belang zijn voor de toekomstige kwaliteit van onze samenleving. De raad onderzoekt daarbij telkens of de in het vigerende beleid gehanteerde veronderstellingen in het licht van nieuwe theoretische en empirische kennis nog houdbaar zijn, en formuleert alternatieven.
